Soooo, there's this one thing I won't ever, like, really never ever understand in fanfiction.
Maybe some of you folks can help me out here.
The thing I don't get in fanfics are stories I like to call "WTF?!-AU"s. Yes, this is about Alternate Universe.
In general, I don't have a problem with AU or AR (alternate reality, in case you're wondering). I mean, it's nice to explore some possibilities that could've happened (for example, in the football fandom, René Adler thought long and hard about giving up his career after he broke his rip in 2006), or if you change one detail in a fandom (come on, we all wanted Sirius Black back, didn't we?). Hell, I wrote a vampire!fic in the football fandom ^^
I mean, there are approved AUs left and right. One example is the Star Trek universe. The last movie in itself is an alternate reality of the Star Trek classic series, and there's an approved novel in which Lt. Worf and Deanna Troi are a couple. That one, naturally, became AU when Riker and Deanna married.
But the one thing I won't ever get are the AUs in which the characters are completely removed from the fandom they belong to.
Example. Harry Potter. I don't know how many fics I stumbled upon where Harry and Draco were ordinary school boys. No magic in sight. Huh?
Or Final Fantasy VII. Highschool fics, or, one I stumbled across just now - Zack Fair owning a gym and having nothing to do with SOLDIER or anything. Huh?
Or football fandom. One player being a cop and the other player being a drug dealer. Huh?!
I mean, when I'm reading in a particular fandom, I'm reading because I want to read about that fandom, right? If I want to read about cops and drug dealers, or guys owning a gym, or ordinary school fics, I go the the original works section, right?
So, what I want to know now, my dear flist.
Can anyone explain this phenomenon to me apart from "I saw those two guys from that fandom in my head and thus placed it in that fandom though it has nothing to do with said fandom"?
I'm really curious.
Keep on rolling!
