Mind My Own Damn Business Next Time

Feb 14, 2008 16:10

My XM show got preempted yesterday by the Roger Clemens hearings yesterday, and rather than subject myself to that farce, I snuck out to play golf instead.

The golf itself went well (by my standards - shot an 89 at Santa Anita, a par 70 course), but that wasn't the noteworthy aspect.

As Joe can attest, I'm fairly chatty on the golf course, even with strangers. I just find it more interesting to talk with the people I'm going to spend the next four-to-five hours with.

Anyhow, I'm walking up the first fairway, talking to another guy in my group. We were talking about where we were from, and he mentioned that he just moved back to the area after living the last 10+ years in the DC area.

JE: "Oh yeah, what brought you back?"
Golfer 1: "I got divorced and am just trying to get my life back together..."

Oops, I won't pry any further here.

Walking off the first green, I'm talking to another guy in my group, someone I had started a conversation with back on the first tee.

Golfer 2: (Mentions teaching his grandson golf)
JE: "Cool. How many grandchildren do you have?"
Golfer 2: "Let's see, one daughter had three kids, another had 10 ..."
JE: "Ten! How can you have 10 kids in this day and age? I don't know she can handle that."
Golfer 2: "She couldn't - she committed suicide in 2002."

JE: .... stammer ... um .... sorry to hear ....

Ok, no more talking with people about their lives....

(Both guys turned out to be pretty nice guys, but time for me to mind my own damn business.)
