The steampunk genre has opened up all kinds of wonderful possibilities for strong female characters. Eleanor Chance is a dirigible pilot bucking social conventions to make her own way in the world. She's not exactly fearless, but she's capable and competent.

A Conspiracy of Alchemists wasn't a perfect book, it was a whole lot of pulpy, "Weird Tales"-esque fun.
