I'm steadily finishing writing projects, which makes me insanely happy, although one of them is progressing at a particularly infuriating pace. Sometimes, characters are just stubborn like that and it's impossible to get them to understand that there are deadlines to meet. I'm really not at a point in my writing career where I can ignore them or pretend like they don't exist.
Lobsterfest is going on right now. This looks to be the first year since I moved this close to a Red Lobster when I won't be going. My usual partner in crimes against seafood isn't going to be available for the venture. While I usually don't have any trouble doing things on my own, eating lobster just doesn't feel like it should be a solitary activity. It's also really not one of those things that you can do when you're reading a book or writing.
I'm trying to strategize for Free Comic Book day and, upon loooking at the website, I've realized that I might not be home when it transpires. This is a devastating realization as the list of comics that are up this early in the game provoke some serious *want* out of me. I am cursing the day that my favorite local comic store went out of business because I know that the owner would have gotten all of the comics that I would be interested in.
Why am I so interested? Free Comic Book Day lets me test out new series without having to invest any money at all. I've found some great stuff.
The Muqtatafaht Comic Anthology is particularly sparking a serious case of Comic Book Lust in me. I really want to check that one out, as it promises to be something wholly unlike anything I have ever seen previously. Naturally, I want to see the Image 20 issue and the Worlds of Aspen issues, along with the Fantagraphics Donald Duck Family Comics (Free Carl Barks, I'm certain), the Moomin Color Special, and the Peanuts Adventure Time Flipbook. And there are the typical standbys that tickle the Comic Book Happy Place in my brain, like Top Shelf Kids Club (don't judge me-Owly is made of awesome), the Bongo Free for All, and the Valiant preview. Then there's the stuff that I have never heard of and about which I am insanely curious. These are the comics that I want to poke with a stick and see if they move so I can find out how I feel about them, there's Anti, Atomic Robo & FRiends, Barnaby, The Censored Howard Cruise, Finding Gossamyr, Graphic Elvis Preview (because how often will I EVER get to say Graphic Elvis in my lifetime?), Dinosaurs vs Aliens (that one is practically a no-brainer), Lady Death The Beginning, Rockhead & Zinc Alloy 2 for none, The Hypernaturals, and Witchblade Unbalanced Pieces. It looks like a fantastic Free Comic Book Day and they don't even have all of the comics listed yet.
Want to check out the list (and download a few free previews?) it's here:
http://www.freecomicbookday.com/Home/1/1/27/981 Maybe I'll be able to get it all worked out. I understand the irony of saying this, I really, really do, but it would be so cool if they would make it possible for comic book fans who may not be able to get to a participating comic book store, or even fans who wanted to maybe contribute to spreading the comic book love to buy a packet of the special Free Comic Book Day editions.
I really do love Free Comic Book Day, it's my favorite day of the year, but some years, the choices are just excruciating.
