May
May is the month that I can count on for the weather to turn hot, finally. Once the weather gets warm enough that my parking spot no longer resembles a gigantic mud hole with a couple of trenches through it, it gets much easier to just go for random drives because it's no longer a logistical nightmare to try to get the car out without getting stuck.
Little random jaunts that get me out of the house help me get inspiration for writing. He's got that figured out pretty well, to the point that he makes sure he always knows where all of our keys are and makes sure that we have the right music to listen to. He's almost always up for a mini road trip when the mood takes me. Sometimes it's to go and get some groceries to make something that I'm hungry for, other times it's to pick up some research materials. Sometimes, it's just to get out of the house for a little while.
May also brings thunderstorms. I've always liked rain. The area of the country where I grew up always seemed to get its rain in one big spurt. We still sometimes sit out on the back porch watching the storms roll in from miles away when we go to visit my parents. I sleep better when it storms. The thunder bothers him, sometimes. He jumps a little when it crashes too loudly for his comfort.
May is the month when I start breaking out the crock pot, so I can cook a few really good meals without heating up the entire house, because warming up quickly heads right to too hot, sticky and uncomfortable. My thoughts start turning to fresh, home grown tomatoes and making tomato sandwiches, along with summer blockbuster movies and too much popcorn late at night.
Summer is the time for horrible monster movies and superhero flicks. It's a wonderland of too many special effects and just enough plot to make the movie seem entertaining. It's also a time for outdoor concerts and outdoor movies, if you can find somewhere showing them. We're fortunate to live somewhere that does. There's nothing like sprawling on a blanket in the grass and watching a classic movie with the stars overhead.
May, to me, is the beginning of summer and the start of all of the things you can only do then.
