Event
It's the one day a year that I eagerly wake up early. I set the alarm and double and triple-checked it to make sure that it's set. He knows, when that alarm goes off, I won't be smacking the snooze button or protesting that it's too early. Instead, I'll be getting out of bed, getting dressed, and going through my routine so we can get out of the house and go get some breakfast.
We have a both a plan and a schedule. Free Comic Book Day only happens once a year, and it's better than Christmas for me. I have a list of the participating shops in our area and what times they open so that we can organize our plans of attack. I've also got a small notebook and pen with me, so I can write down any titles that are of interest and where I found them, so I can come back on a much more calm day and make a few purchases. I'm geeking out and I know it. He's not really a fanboy, but he reads any of the comics that he thinks look interesting. Mostly, he's there to help me remember that I'm going to have to eat lunch sometime and steer me away from the possibility of over-caffeinating myself or eating far too much sugar. He's also the one who drives because I am singularly focused on the joy of a bundle of free pieces of colorful art distributed with abandon to appreciative masses, some of them veterans of Free Comic Book Day, others completely new to what the world of comics has to offer.
On Free Comic Book Day, I'm gleefully riding the high of discovery, because there will be artists and titles that I've never encountered with previews that will give me plenty of time to talk to my favorite comic book store so I can have copies ordered. He's just along because he likes seeing me so excited and happy. Well, that and, at some point, stopping somewhere to get lunch.
Free Comic Book Day is, in fact, a real event, and, yes, I'm a comic book geek and it really is like Christmas to me. This year is actually the FIRST year that I'm going to miss it, because I'm going to be away visiting family and there are NO participating stores in the area. Yes, I am a little grumpy about that. However, if you're curious about Free Comic Book Day and/or you want to find someone participating near you, just go to this website:
