An interlude for Ponyo and Mexican food...

I went to see "Ponyo" today.  As always with Miyazaki, the animation was beautiful and bright.  The story was cute, though I thought some of Ponyo's dialog got kind of annoying.  I suppose mainly it was because she was supposed to be a five year-old, but she sounded much younger than that.  I've read some criticism that it was short on plot, or essentially nonsensical.  I'm not sure why people seemed to have issues with the plot, I thought the story was coherent and followed pretty logically throughout the movie. It was still completely worth watching, and I will most likely buy it when it comes out on DVD.

My friend and I ate in a little Mexican restaurant in the back of a Mexican grocery.  The food was really good, and since we were the only two people there and the store had at least four or five people working we got great service.  I also got to drink a Mexican Coke.  Mexican Cokes do taste different from American Cokes, it's a difference in the sugar that they use, so a Mexican Coke has more of a caramel flavor to it than American Coke does.  There are all sorts of different flavored sodas that I'm very curious about and want to try there, too, including an apple flavored one.

Then, we walked home.  That was a mistake.  I'd sprained my ankle a couple of weeks ago while I was visiting my family.  It was feeling much, much better and so I thought walking home would be fine.  What I forgot was that I have been avoiding walking on concrete as much as possible while my ankle was hurt.  I was doing pretty well until I was almost home, and then the swelling and aching started.

I was too tired to say much about "District 9" last night.  It was really an original and thought-provoking science fiction movie.  Of course, people want to believe that we'd NEVER do something like that....except, humans do things like that all the time to each other in the name of proclaiming others to be "not like us"-and that's without being faced with someone who really is utterly alien to us.  That said, if you are at all a squeamish sort, if you have issues with gore or with violence then "District 9" is DEFINITELY NOT your movie.  I have a pretty strong stomach, most of the time (I ate popcorn all through both Kill bIll movies, no problem), there was a particular part, with a particular line right at the very beginning that put me off my popcorn in a hurry.  Still, it was such a good movie and, yes, this one is one that I will be purchasing, too.
