A letter to Fandom from a Disenfranchised Fangirl

Nov 24, 2008 11:07

Dear Fandom,

You disappoint me greatly.
I would like to remind you all that once, there was quality in movies, books, and shows. Just because everything is made of degraded suckage now doesn't mean that we should all settle and forget the epicness that has once been made.

Don't settle for run-of-the-mill, cliche, average, mediocre-at-best quality.

We should demand better fandoms to fangirl.
and better fangirls to join with

This is my rallying cry.
  • Stand up for your right as a fangirl, and seek better fandoms.
  • Be classy, be mature, be talented.
  • Don't stoop to the level of pathetic self-insert idolization. Remember the once-great heroes, heroines and truly original Love stories that brought us into fandom. Remember character flaws and plot development. Remember realistic dialogue and witty repartee. Remember plot twists and heart-wretching urst. Remember the drama and action and romance that once made you a FAN.
  • Think of your first fandom.
  • What was it that drew you into this world?
  • Is there a fandom worthy of that same zeal today? Or have we all just forgotten what it was like to be truly inspired by the creativity of others? Just because publishers, networks, and production studios have lowered their standards for quality, that doesn't mean that WE should.
  • Fight back against there’s-nothing-else-on, fight back against not-that-bad, fight back against it-gets-better-the-more-you-watch-it.
  • Demand LOVE AT FIRST TRAILER. Demand INSTA-OBSESSION.
  • Try to remember a time when fandom didn't influence canon.
  • Canon was canon, independent of fandom.
  • We should praise creativity and ingenuity, not below-average character and plot development for the sake of cliche pseudo-EPICness.
  • Say no to the degredation of American Literature. (We're already way behind on the world stage.)
We should strive to make fandom greater by choosing carefully what and why we fangirl.

I implore you, look in your fangirl hearts and decide for yourself, are these really the legacies we want to leave behind for future fangirls?

Thank you.
