Sunday: While drawing blood from the horse I draw blood from every day, I talked to Nasser a little. He said he was 23 years old! I couldn’t believe it! But I’m not really sure if it’s a true 23 since they use a different calendar than we do. Anyway, I asked if he was married. He said no, he was a bachelor. I thought it was funny - since we say we’re single, or available. Guys don’t usually come right out and say they are bachelors. He said he will probably get married next year and that his family will choose his bride. He said that he will miss me very much - it took a bit to get it out, so I think he’s been practicing. Those were the most words I had exchanged with him the entire time I’ve been here! I thought it was very sweet!
The surgery horse is not doing well. His white blood cell count shot up to over 15, when it had started out at around 6. An infection in the surgical site didn’t seem likely since it was so fast and he wasn’t lame. But he was very dull and things just didn’t look good. Goncalo and I lost our bet - since the horse began to colic in the mid-morning - no gut sounds, little feces passed. I just shook my head, wondering why in the world they wanted to continue their management of elective surgeries and not consider changing their policy. Five of five of the past elective surgeries had colicked post-surgery. If it were me, I’d certainly be concerned about those odds.
I continued to work on my video during the break. I tried to copy a DVD for Goncalo but he had given me a DVD-R, rather than the DVD+R which my computer works with. I decided to just recopy the movie onto my computer and leave him with my copy - figuring I can just copy it back on to a DVD when I get home.
Not much else happened during the day. We were supposed to go to FatiFete (FatiFeet) but Annamari wasn’t feeling well. So we decided to go to a closer place. We ended up at a place called Japengo’s. A very nice restaurant, very modern and almost Japanese like - square tables, square plates. They had sushi there, along with some Italian recipes. I decided to stick with something familiar, so I had alfredo with chicken. I also ordered some French fries as an appetizer - thinking it would be a small amount. Well, it was an entire plate-full!
We had dessert at the coffee shop next door and then headed home. I was thinking we’d catch a cab, but AM said it was only a 25 minute walk back to the hospital. I was concerned again for the walk, since the “5 minute” walk turned out to be a lot longer and it was hot outside. But she insisted, so off we went. In true form, 25 minutes turned into at least 45 minutes (AM said because I was walking so slow). I was cooked when I got home - well-done, I’d say. I walked into my nicely air conditioned apartment and took a much-needed shower. Crazy people - those that like walking. I will never get used to it!!!
