Another week
What has happened this week? Well our new lodger has arrived from Australia, after some difficulties, and is settling in happily. We even managed to get most of the house clean for her... Ok BX managed to get the house in order and has now come down with a cold/illness that left him awake until 5am and sleeping through the day. To be fair I was at work that afternoon which is why I couldn't help.
I have started working as a Play leader at an After School Club. Its been an education and confirmed that I want to work Secondary school. The kids are all primary school age and I've found that the lack of routine (its a free play scheme) is very difficult to maintain. I keep having to check myself and remember that its not a classroom and I can't make them sit down and listen! But when I remember that I'm not educating them (its amazing how ingrained that is) I generally relax enough to have fun.
We've had a couple of 'incidences'. The first was a fire alarm being set off. The circumstances of which are a little unclear but it ended up with the full fire brigade turning up to try and switch it off (apparently they had nothing else to do, we had called them to tell them it wasn't an emergency). The kids enjoyed it, but they would have to have pushed it 10mins before parents started showing up! Also, who puts fire alarms in places where children play regularly which do not have the plastic covers. Its also at elbow level...
That was Friday. Monday we had a kid run home, we rang the mum and she didn't seem to mind. However it left me with out an assistant as she followed her to make sure she was safe. We were lucky because the regional manager was there so she was able to leave and not leave us short handed. If we hadn't had that fluke I think we would have been a lot worse off.
But I'm organizing a staff meeting next week and I'm going to go through the procedures and make sure everyone is on the same page (make sure I know what the page is too!)
