Started Midnight’s Children - Salman Rushdie when it came out and caused such a big stir, but I was to young to get it, so I did not finish... may give it another try sometime.
I tried reading Wuthering Heights about three times, but gave up each time because of the intense need to smack the characters... and duely stayed far, far away from Austen and any Bronte. Otherwise:
Oddly, I think I would do much worse if someone came up with a list of german lit one has to have read... and yes, I do realise Tolstoy is not english, but you get my meaning.
German literature - Shivers. I don't think there are any German books on the list at all - there are a couple of Russians, a few French and even a Japanese, but no Germans....
