My voice has evaporated, but I feel fine besides that. However, it makes my job a little difficult. I have discovered that if I drop the pitch of my voice about an octave, I can make sounds come out; otherwise, it cracks and you can understand maybe every other word. My laugh sounds like a dying hyena. It kind of sucks. I am doing everything I can to get better fast though. And I hope I can keep from infecting anyone else with my illness.
Tomorrow I get to interview Shareeka Epps (the girl from Half Nelson) so i am hoping I have a voice by then. I've been looking forward to this interview for a while now. In other interview-related news, we talked to James Lipton on Monday and he was every bit as awesome as you would expect. On Thursday, we're talking to Geoff Stults who was the jerk boyfriend that Owen Wilson had to compete with in Wedding Crashers, in addition to his regular role on Seventh Heaven and lots of other appearances in sitcoms and movies. Should be fun.
I have recently enjoyed the new albums of Arcade Fire and The Shins. Both are excellent. I think the Arcade Fire are maybe more combative this time around, lyrically. The album feels more intentional, and while the music is similar to Funeral, it seems like they have taken it to the next level and honed their sound even more. The Shins are always very listenable and accessible, and their new album is no exception. I like that even though I was listening to the album for the first time, I felt like the songs were already familiar. This is not to say that it's predictable or formulaic, but it just has that melodic, simple feel with a few new textures thrown in for good measure.
Blood Diamond came out on DVD today. If you haven't seen it, rush out to the nearest video store and rent it or take the risk and buy a copy at Best Buy. This film is so powerful. Tim and I watched it at the Ogden 6 this past weekend and it just made my heart ache and stirred up that latent activist inside me. Indelible performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Honsou, with great support from Jennifer Connelly in arguably her most likeable role since Labyrinth. The cinematography is breathtaking as well. I can't recommend it enough.
I watched For Your Consideration over the weekend. It's got its moments, and some of the characters are absolutely hysterical in every scene. But overall, a disappoinment compared to Christopher Guest's earlier cult classics such as Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and most notably This Is Spinal Tap. See it if you want to chuckle, but don't expect to belly laugh.
Time for me to take a nap! I hope everyone's week is going well. And if it's not, at least take solace in the knowledge that you're not Alberto Gonzalez.
