We got a diagnosis for my dad. I feel a bit of a dumbass for not having thought of it but he has got an inactive thyroid. This explains why he has put on so much weight (I thought it was just the beer and the cheese and biscuit snackings but this makes so much more sense) and why he is tired so often.
