For my dissertation (the UK equivalent of a thesis paper) I am conducting a study into the politics of language and sexuality, with particular reference to the word "slut". Can members of either gender be sluts?
yes, but the majority of people that are called it are girls
Can you provide any connotationsthat you have with sluts? eg: films, celebraties, mental images, figures in literature etc etc

Is slut a term of judgment? If so, what is being judged? And by what standard?
yes, the way a person lives their life is being judged and the decisions they make in their life.
How much sex is appropriprate? Does this figure differ for men and women?
the figure differs from different people as to how much sex is appropriate. In general though it is more acceptable for men to sleep with a lot of people than it is for women.
Are sluts a heterosexual concept? Can gay women/men be sluts?
It is probably more of a heterosexual judgement but i guess it does appear in the gay community aswell
Is sexual behaviour an identifying characteristic of someones personality?
It shouldnt be but often it is!
