Muddling through.
I watched The Following on Hulu. [I have thoughts...]I have thoughts. And misgivings. It's an extremely well crafted bit of television, appealing shot and acted, with decently smart writing - engaging but yet still not making you think too hard. Which is, for television, very smart writing indeed.
And it's torture porn.
There's a strong element of misogyny in there. Women are the object of the violence, the obsessions, the flawed pieces, the center of what is wrong with the protagonists. The villain focuses on them for his victims. The anti-hero is brought down by either failing them, or falling for the villain's wife and staining his soul by sleeping with her. It all comes down to the women and How They Dun Men Wrong.
And it's torture porn, pure and simple.
So. Conflicted, obviously. And I don't know if I'm going to keep watching or not, because at its heart, like the story it's telling, it feels rotten.
