YPSILANTI - Eastern Michigan University will file an unfair labor practice against the AAUP today at 8 a.m. for failing to bargain in good faith and participating in an illegal strike.

The EMU chapter of the AAUP walked away from negotiations at 10:10 p.m., Thursday, citing a lack of progress.

“There is still time to reach an agreement that would minimize any impact on the students before classes begin Sept. 6,” said Hartmut Hoft, chief negotiator and dean of the college of arts and sciences. “It’s clear, despite the University’s best efforts, the AAUP leadership was intent on striking and engaged in surface bargaining. They clearly had no intention of reaching an agreement. This is unacceptable and our faculty and students deserve better.”

Another bargaining session is scheduled for Sept. 1 at 8 a.m.

"We are very disappointed that the AAUP has chosen this course. As parents and students come to campus this weekend in preparation for the start of school, we want to assure them that the University is committed to having classes begin Sept. 6,” said Hoft.  “Hopefully the AAUP leadership will return to the bargaining table committed to negotiating constructively and in good faith.”

The AAUP represents 689 full-time faculty at EMU.
