Let me tell you all something that'll probably sound fairly dumb. I was sitting on our front porch this evening with various other members of the family distributing the box of candy, messing around on the guitar very quietly so that (optimally) no one could hear me, with my face all painted up with red and white to look halloweenish. (no costume, just makeup, a wool shawl for warmth, and jeans.) And everyone went away for a few minutes, and then this girl around my age came up to the porch and I said Hi and reached for the candy, but she said, "No actually it's ok, I just wanted to hear a song." How cool is that?
So I played her a song (with four whole chords, even! and it was a White Stripes song!) and then she clapped at the end and said thanks and left. It sounds really dumb, but it made me so happy. No one has ever asked me to perform something before. I've always practised in a sound-insulated room or else forced a sister to listen to something, but I've never played to what you might call a willing audience before. And it was so cool! haha. I only made one mistake, and I compensated fine, and I remembered all the verses, and I even did the little fingerpicking solo at the end. I want to be her friend now. So anyway, let this be a lesson- even if they look shy, always ask the kid with a guitar to play you something. It will make their day.
