Guilt already settling in...

Sep 11, 2010 19:10

I received my new sofa today. I love it. Perhaps a bit too much.

Because the part of me that believes "I deserve nice things" fully woke up.

You see, my DVD player broke months ago, and the TV I've had for 15 years thinks the volume button is the channel button.

So after assembling my sofa, I got in the car and bought a new TV and a BluRay player. (Also my first BluRay disc -- can you believe I didn't already own The Princess Bride?)

(The guilt started stirring in its coma.)

But there's more. Despite the fact that I have two gift afghans half-finished, I've also decided it's about bloody time that I made one for myself. I've known the pattern I want since I started crocheting, so I stopped off at Michael's to pick up the proper navy blue.

But I couldn't find it. I could find dark-blues and blue-blacks, but no blue-that-shouts-Cate. So in the end, I am replicating the first afghan I made: to donate to the victims of the Black Saturday bushfires. They say you shouldn't donate anything to charity that you wouldn't want yourself. I bought out the store's story of the colourway.

(And the guilt woke up, suddenly and completely.)

I can afford these things, so that's not really the issue. It's just that they may have silenced a little birdie that was telling me I could go to Surrey and Iowa at Christmas and Denmark in the spring.

But if I'm really good, and I sacrifice....
