Reservoirs (Day 23)

is here.

It's always been part of my personal canon that Remus and Regulus loathe each other, ever since I wrote Trinkets, which was one of my earliest fics. Of all of the Marauders, Remus is the one Regulus resents the most, right from the age of eleven, because he looks at this scruffy, sickly, awkward halfblood and cannot understand why Sirius has suddenly started loving him more than he loves Regulus. Remus, on the other hand, reads all that loathing as sheer pure-blooded nastiness and dislikes him back.

Writing Regulus is always a fine line between blind loyalty and stupidity. The challenge is to make it chlear that he knows the consequences for his actions, but he goes ahead anyway because he loves his family and he loves his brother and the middle is an awful place to be. This Regulus helped his brother, knowing that it would be punished, and sees being tied to a tree as a perfectly predictable and reasonable response. And he's certainly not about to let Remus Lupin, of all people, rescue him.

Yeah, so basically the woobiest Death Eater ever. I swear, every time I write him I just want to give him a hug and feed him chocolate biscuits and promise him everything will be okay.
