I read Chester Brown's "I Never Liked You" while standing in my campus bookstore. I really liked it and I really liked that he dedicated it to Sook-Yin Lee. I think it's the best book I've read in awhile, everyone says that but I really like the way all the dialogue was real simple, straightforward y'know? It reminded me of my childhood, even though it wasn't like Brown's, while flipping the pages it felt like mine anyway. I didn't really feel like leaving the bookstore yet, so I flipped through Ghost World, Watchman and a bit of Sin City: The Hard Goodbye as well; I haven't chosen my essay topic yet, but I think I'd like to work with Chester Brown and Ghost World, I really enjoyed the writing in the first and the art in the second. So I'm sitting here in this caramel cube chair wondering if any of the book salespeople are gonna bother me for just bumming around here. A woman wearing bright red pants, a white cable knit sweater and 50s style secretary glasses just walked by and gave me a smile. I think she works here. I guess that means it's fine. When I started typing this entry into my notebook, I was listening to a dirty hip hop version of "Sugar Pie Honey Bunch" and it made me laugh. It's funny when music doesn't match the environment, or rather it does, but only for those who are listening. Today I decided, is an interesting day. For no other reason than the fact that I feel ordinary, and leaping into the pages of a comic book is alright with me.
