PSA: Tagless Onesies May Cause Chemical Burns

Sep 12, 2008 11:25

This is for all of my parent-friends and soon-to-be parent friends (and anyone planning on buying baby clothes in the near future).

Per the consumer watch website Z Recommends, it looks like several brands of infant clothes with silk-screened "tags" on their onesies and shirts have chemicals in them that can irritate the skin, and, if left untreated, can develop into weeping sores that look disturbingly like a chemical burn on their backs and up to the hairline. Primarily the complaints seem to come from people with Carter's brand clothes, but kids wearing Gerber and Circo have also come up with the same symptoms.

Now, this does not affect everyone. Noah, for example, has a ton of Gerber and Carter's stuff and he hasn't presented with any signs that the "tags" are bothering him, but the reports from the blogosphere of kids with these symptoms are building to a crescendo.

However, from all accounts if you stop using the offending garment right away, it will pretty much eliminate any long-term effects, and the contact dermatitis will clear up just like any other kind of contact dermatitis. It's also been noted that you can just put fabric tape over the 'tag" and it should keep the chemicals from coming into contact with your kid's skin.
