I grew up with indoor-outdoor cats and too many disappeared or ended up dead for me to be able to abide by that rule as an adult. I thought about leashes and tried them on my two cats when they were kittens but they would NOT tolerate the harnesses, so I gave that up after a couple months. It would be nice to have a spacious cage like that - one of my friends growing up had a cage that connected both inside the garage to the outside with a big tunnel, so that the dogs could go inside when they were kenneled up if it was too cold or too hot and I thought it was the coolest damn thing.
I just leave the windows and sliding doors open and the cats sniff the outside. Lol. We also have at least one pretty regular indoor-outdoor cat staking out in the shrubbery of the backyard, and I don't feel like dealing with cat-fight wounds.
One of my desired projects for my house is to start a vegetable garden (I do love hearing about yours!), but I just don't know how much work it would be with such an annoying climate (Minnesota), and we also have deer and rabbits and crows all over the place. Ugh! We battle every year over the flower garden because the rabbits and deer eat all my flowers.
You'll just have to plan thoroughly for Naked Gardening next year ;)
