Prompt: The day it all went wrong
Universe: Future Unnamed Legacy
Word Count: 455
Notes: As always for this verse, names may change. This is a scene that is likely to be edited quite a bit when it actually appears, since there will be multiple things going on at once and flipping back and forth will be necessary.

Something was wrong.

Rose had been holding off from using her power, knowing what would happen if she did, but her passive systems were still in place - she still could feel the hood and the people in it.

And something about the hood felt off.

It took time for her to trace the crack, figure out what had happened. When she was done, she winced. "They wouldn't have. They couldn't have."

Hopefully this would stay minor...

She waited, on tenterhooks, for half an hour, carefully cradling her broken wrist. The temptation to fix it was worse than ever, but she could not give in, not now.

Something snapped in her connections as a beeping started from one of the machines in the other half of the basement. "Fuck," she whispered. "Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck."

It took a few minutes for anyone to notice the beeping, but then someone must have, because Anne was coming down the stairs. Rose closed her eyes. "Shit."

"So you finally gave in," Anne began. Then she noticed how Rose was still cradling her wrist. "No. You didn't. But someone did." She looked at the machine. "Should do the trick, though."

As the beeping began to get louder and faster, Rose felt her connections strengthening. Something began to pull on her.

And then Anne placed her hand on the scanner and hit the button (grinning maniacally) and the machine snapped on and Rose suddenly felt like she was being pulled in two directions at once, like every molecule in her body was being tugged on by multiple hands. She could feel her powers draining as the connections got ever stronger, as her body began to fade in and out of reality.

It was too late. The process was started.

She took care of the one bit of pain that she could, finally healing her broken wrist. Then she tried to fight through the pain, trying desperately to think of a way to solve this.

She was not going to die, not now, not like this.

There. There was a chance. Rose desperately poured the power she had left into the connections, into following the ties that were pulling on her.

Everything snapped and she was somewhere else, surrounded by people. She couldn't care enough to actually pay attention to them, not yet, not when her entire body felt like she'd been run over by a steamroller. Not when there was a chance that...

She was still alive. She still had her passive connections. Some things were left to her; Anne hadn't succeeded completely. She'd succeeded enough, though, and Rose no longer had the power to end her.

And then a new weight pressed down on her, and she moaned.
