The Oscars are to be awarded tomorrow night. The consensus of opinion is that Colin Firth will walk with the award for his role in The King’s Speech. I have two thoughts about this.
First off, I hope Hollywood get a message from all this craziness over this movie. For too long, the producers of movies in the US have felt the only way a movie will be a success is if they load the screen with CGI, car chases, Kim Kardassian look-a-likes and enough gore to make anyone sick. I rather hope they get the idea that a movie can be successful and wildly entertaining if the story is well written and the actors have some bit of training. I mean who would think that a movie about a King of England, long gone and nearly forgotten in this country, would have made such an impact on us. But then anyone’s struggle to overcome an obstacle can impact even those of us who have been entertained far too long in the 3-D theatre.
Secondly-okay Colin Firth deserves this award. Believe me, I understand this. However a part of me so wants Jeff Bridges to walk away with the statue two years in a row. Smart money in Las Vegas is saying Firth will win and put Bridges at 83 to 1. That is a walk away as far as I am concerned. There was a columnist who referred to Bridges portrayal of Rooster Cogburn as “breaking no new ground” as far as his acting skills.
I must take acceptation.
If you consider Bridges’ body of work, there is always new ground being broken. I really cannot see any two of his roles quite like the any other. Okay, so Rooster Cogburn may be an ancestor of The Dude, I will give you that. However, compare the roles Bridges has taken over his career and you will not see a pattern of any sort. Each role he takes breaks new ground and it took a bit of courage to tackle a role that an American icon, John Wayne, won his one and only Oscar for. Besides, I adore the man. He is a kook first class in his real life but a gentle one. I have followed his career for years and can’t really think of too many films he has been in that I did not like.
The smart money is on Mr. Firth and yes he does deserve the award. But there is a tiny part of me that is hoping that Jeff Bridges’ name will be called out Sunday night for the second time in two years.
Besides, if Bridges wins I could make $830. Something to be said about that, you know.
