Eight years before start of series
♦Xanxus(Age 16), son of Vongola Ninth, has been raised to believe that he's going to be the next Vongola boss, the Tenth (Decimo)
♦Squalo is classmates with Dino Cavallone, the heir to the Cavallone famiglia.
♦Squalo(Age 14) meets Xanxus, and instantly decides he wants to follow him and serve him. He makes a vow to grow out his hair until Xanxus becomes the Tenth Vongola Boss.
♦Squalo cuts off his own left hand in order to defeat Tir, the Sword Emperor and then current leader of Varia, in order to understand him better as Tir fights without a left hand. Squalo gets a mechanical hand with a sword mounted on and beats Tir, offered the position of Varia leader. He turns it down and hands the position over to Xanxus instead, becoming his second in command.
♦Belphegor(Age 8) is a prince in an unknown kingdom. He has a twin brother named Rasiel, who always beats him at everything. They're always fighting, and one day Bel manages to kill Rasiel and (supposedly) his entire kingdom. He joins Varia shortly after.
♦Levi A Than(Age 15), Lussuria(Age 17) and Mammon(mysterious infant) were also members of Varia at the time.
♦Xanxus reads his father's journal, and in it states that several years ago when a woman came to him claiming to be the mother of his child because said child possessed the extremely rare 'Flame of Wrath' that was only known to be used by Vongola second, he didn't have the heart to turn them away and said that it was indeed his child, despite the fact that he had never seen the woman before in his life.
♦Xanxus feels betrayed, lied to and royally pissed off.
♦Varia is mobilized as Xanxus decides to take the Vongola by force.
♦Varia (a group of teens) mostly succeed in subduing the Vongola forces, with Xanxus and Squalo facing off against Ninth in the basement.
♦Squalo is mostly incapacitated and Xanxus assumes he's unconscious. Xanxus goes off on a huge rant to his father about how he knew everything now and how he had been lied to his entire life. Squalo hears every word, the Ninth can't find it in his heart to kill his son so he uses the Vongola Primo(first) secret technique "Zero Point Breakthrough" to freeze Xanxus' flames and encase him in unmeltable ice where he's trapped for eight years while the Varia quietly plan to free him.

Dying Will Flames
♦The Dying Will Flame (Viz: Deathperation Flame) is regarded as the symbol of the Mafia World. At the beginning of the series, it had only minor relevance with the overall plot (mostly through its relation with Reborn's Dying Will Bullet and Tsuna's "resurrected" form). But as the story progressed, it became a more central element and is currently the source of most of the supernatural powers seen in the series. There are many items in the series that light up and/or use Dying Will Flames for some purpose. Among those, the Rings treasured by the Mafia deserve a special mention due to their long history and importance. In the Future Arc, the Flames of these Rings serve as the power source for the Box Weapons.
♦The Dying Will Flame is described as high-density form of energy that is refined from one's own life-force. Due the way how it resonates with one's emotions, it has been regarded as a type of battle aura. However, unlike the aura, which is a supernatural phenomenon can only be seen by a few individuals, the Dying Will Flame is in many ways more akin to a real flame, possessing even its own destructive properties.
♦Dying Will Flames are graded accordingly with their purity, which has a direct relationship with the strength of an individual's resolve. Among other things, this rate of purity serves to indicate how much of the special characteristics of the Flames are being drawn out. Each Flames Attribute has its own special characteristic.
♦There are a total of seven different types of Sky Dying Will Flame, each shaded with a different color of the rainbow. These seven Attributes of the Sky Dying Will Flames are named after the titles of the Vongola Boss and his Guardians, and are collectively known as the "Seven Flames of the Sky".
♦Sky Flame: Among all the seven attributes, Sky Flames possesses the greatest propulsion power, specially those of high-purity. Described as having many mysteries, its special trait, Harmony, represents a state without contradiction nor flaws in which the balance of the whole is maintained. Bearers of the Sky-attribute are said to be exceptionally rare and most of the known ones share the common trait of possessing great insight.
♦Storm Flame: Highly offensive Flames, its Disintegration special trait can induce anything that touches the Flames into decaying and breaking apart, including other Dying Will Flames.
♦Rain Flame: Rain-attribute Flames are in many ways more similar to water than actual flames. Its Tranquility special trait carries the meaning of stillness and pacification. Thus, these Flames can be used to weaken a target by robbing its strength and capacity of movement. There are also a known example of it being used to create ice.
♦Sun Flame: The Activation special trait of the Sun Flames has the power to induce and improve the efficiency of any type of activity. As such, it is an optimal Flame for purposes of fulfilling support roles such as healing and strengthening individuals. But that same characteristic also makes it difficult to use Sun Flames in direct combat.
♦Lightning Flame: Lightning Flames are in many ways more similar to electricity than actual flames. The Solidification special trait of these Flames can be employed harden and increase the firmness of objects. By themselves, the Flames can used defensively by projecting a solid barrier and offensively by cutting as if sharp blades or electrocuting as if real electricity.
♦Cloud Flames: The Propagation special trait of Cloud Flames carries a meaning of increase and replication. As such, it is suited for anything that involves increase of size and multiplication of numbers. Also, this Propagation effect is highly advantageous when performing techniques meant to cover a great area, such as creating a cyclone or a a impervious force field. Coincidence or not, a number of Cloud Box Weapons have the ability to pull out and/or absorb the Flames of the enemy.
♦Mist Flames: The Construction special trait makes the Mist Flames optimal to be used along Illusions, specially during the creation of Real Illusions. They are described as having a low hardness and, consequentially, it has a weak offensive power.
♦The Flame of Wrath (Viz: Flame of Rage) is, an extremely powerful and exceedingly rare type of flame. It is said that among the Vongola Bosses, the only one who fought with bare hands was Vongola Second because of this Flame. The special characteristic of this Flame is its extreme destructive power which can reduce anything to ashes. Also, this Flame was seen only when the 2nd Vongola Boss was enraged; so, it earned the title "Flame of Wrath" to support this theory. The Future Arc hints that the Flame of Wrath contains Storm Flames, as when Xanxus inserted it into his box weapon with the sky flames from his ring, he created a weapon that possessed Sky's Harmony and Storm's Disintergration.
Tri-ni-set
♦In this world, there exist a large number of Rings with hidden powers. The most powerful of these are the Mare Rings, the Vongola Rings, and the Arcobaleno Pacifiers, which are the Rings that make up the Tri-ni-set or 7³. Each set contains 7 Rings, so there are 21 Rings in total. 7³ is the foundation of this world, and the Arcobaleno sacrifice themselves in order to protect it.
♦Each element of the Tri-ni-set has its own individual and unique power, which is represented by their names.
♦The Vongola Rings' Miracle is the ability to travel down the Verticle Space-Time Axis, which is represented by the name Vongola, which means Clam.
♦The Mare Rings' Miracle is the ability to travel horizontally along the Space-Time Axis, which is represented by the name Mare, which means Sea.
♦The Arcobaleno Pacifiers' Miracle is the ability to exist as points in space and time, which is represented by the name Arcobaleno, which means Rainbow.
♦The Tri-ni-set song, is a song that had been engraved into Yuni's mind since birth. This song talks about the three Tri-ni-set owners, the Vongola, the Mare and the Arcobaleno, and their role in the Space-time Axis.
The song goes:
The Sea knows no bounds.
The Clam passes down its form from Generation to Generation.
The Rainbow appears from time to time before fading away.
Arcobaleno
♦The Arcobaleno ("Rainbow" in Italian) is a group made up of the seven strongest infants, who each possess a pacifier that represent the different colors of the rainbow, with each color corresponding with their Dying Will Flame.
♦The Arcobaleno were transformed from adults into their infant and current forms. They are mentioned to have sacrificed themselves in order to protect the Tri-Ni-Set (7³), or "ultimate power". The Arcobaleno are also mentioned to be "walking out of time" meaning that they cannot age or die due to old age.
♦Each of them has their own unique "curse" and specific abilities, as well as the ability to emit the Dying Will Flame throughout their entire body.
♦Reborn is the holder of the Sun Pacifier, also known as the world's strongest hitman. A titular character, Reborn is an infant hitman belonging to the Vongola Family. As the Ninth Vongola Boss' most trusted member, he becomes Tsuna's home tutor and trains him into becoming a mafia Boss. Before he trained Tsuna though, he was training Dino Cavallone to be the next boss of the Cavallone famiglia. (Who were strong allies of the Vongola)
♦Verde is the holder of the Lightning Pacifier, he is also the smartest Arcobaleno in Intelligence. Briefly mentioned by Reborn as the person who sent assassins to kill Tsuna. Verde is also one of the three scientists who develops the Box Weapons in the Future. Reborn and Lal Mirch note that while Verde is an Arcobaleno, he is "not one of us," and "you can never tell what he is thinking." Verde appears to be an extremely mysterious person who is devoted to further progressing his experiments; according to Reborn, he'd do anything for them.
♦Colonnello is the holder of the Rain Pacifier. Although he is not part of the original seven Arcobaleno, he attained the Rain Pacifier after attempting to take Lal's place on the day that they were all turned into babies. He is in charge of the training ground behind Mafia Land and was a former member of the COMSUBIN, thus he is an expert when it come to using heavy artillery, using an anti-tank Rifle as his primary weapon. Colonnello also has a rivalry with Reborn and vice-versa, but despite this, he shares many traits with Reborn, like being a merciless tutor, suddenly taking naps, and having a sharp tongue. He becomes Ryohei's home tutor during the Vongola Ring Conflict, and in the Future, he is said to have died trying to protect Viper (Mammon).
♦Skull is the holder of the Cloud Pacifier. Head of the Combat forces for the Calcassa Family, Skull wears a full leather outfit and a motorcycle helmet, which is copied by all his subordinates. He is implied to be not as powerful an infant as Reborn and Colonnello, whom he calls his senpai's, and is looked down upon and ridiculed by the two. Reborn considers Skull as an errand boy and Skull, to his dismay, does not deny the fact that the only person he was an errand boy for was Reborn.
♦Viper is the holder of the Mist Pacifier. He is a member of the elite assassination team, the Varia, under the name Mammon. Known as the Arcobaleno's best spellcaster and Illusionist, Viper has the Ability to cast powerful Illusions, as well as being able to locate any person by sneezing into a piece of paper (he carries a roll of paper with him); the spit or mucus that sticks to the paper shows a map leading to where the desired person is. He claims to have been trying to break the Arcobaleno curse, and had sealed his Pacifier so that other Arcobaleno could not sense him. He has also created a Chain that conceals the power of the Arcobaleno Pacifiers, as well as the Vongola Rings. The chain is known as the Mammon Chain. He is said to be dead in the Future, with Gingerbread claiming that he took his own life after feeling there was no other way out.
♦Fon is the holder of the Storm Pacifier and is the Master of I-Pin. He originates from China, and is also an experienced martial artist. According to Reborn, he is so strong that he has been champion of the top martial arts tournament in China for three years running.
♦Lal Mirch is the holder of a corrupted pacifier. She is a female Member of the Arcobaleno who states that she cannot live up to the Arcobaleno name, considering herself to be one of its weakest members. She works along side Tsuna's father, Iemitsu in the CEDEF organization for Vongola IX.
♦Luce is the holder of the Sky Pacifier. In the anime, Reborn says that she has a 'mysterious power of insight'. She is shown to be pregnant. It is evident that the Pacifier can be passed down from the original Arcobaleno to the next generations as Luce had passed it down to Aria who in turn passed it down to Yuni. This progression of inheritance largely contrasts with that of other families as Sky Arcobaleno have short lifespans. Aria held the Sky pacifier in the short time between Luce's and her deaths. In the manga, Reborn specifically states that Yuni is the Arcobaleno Boss, even though she is not an Arcobaleno herself.
♦Tri-Ni-Set made the Arcobaleno, but Non Tri-Ni-Set emits waves which kill the Arcobaleno. Thus why all of them except for Lal (who was incomplete and her curse wore off) are dead in the future.
♦All of the Arcobaleno, except for Lal Mirch, have an animal partner.
