If a cell has two or three living neighbors, it lives; otherwise it dies. If a space has exactly three neighbors, a new cell is born there. Repeat until bored.
Life is very simple. It is people that are complicated.
Regarding the last sentence of this comment as a standalone proposition, I would often agree. The word "complicated" immediately summons images of interpersonal, rather than personal, issues, at least in my mind. The sections of life dealing with oneself can be hard, difficult, trying, and confusing, but it is the sections dealing with other people which are most often "complicated".
Dude. I have those - Windows Entertainment Packs 1-4, plus the Arcade. Legally, too! The install CD came with the first Windows computer we ever got, and we just hung on to it for no apparent reason. The really nice thing is that all the games still work correctly, at the right speeds, on XP. :D
But yeah. Life definitely seems too complicated sometimes. Or maybe it's not life - it's people. Yeah. People are complicated. And they make no sense whatsoever.
(Merry Christmas if you celebrate it, and if not, Happy Winter! :)
