Last weekend, I went camping with CTY people. Present were Ken, Jon, Lisa, Lisa's friend Tom, KateK and the ever-lovely Maggie.
There had been a planned NE US CTY reu that fell through due to lack of hosting, so it metamorphized into a camping trip. I had not been camping since 1996, so I was indecisive as to if I should go. I thus missed the Friday departure, but, at the last minute, called Maggie, who was leaving Saturday. I thus took a train up to Providence on Saturday to meet her and go to the South-of-Boston campsite, whereat to meet the others. However! The train power was out between New York and Stamford, Connecticut, so I was forced to spend an extra two hours on the train awaiting a diesel engine to take us to where the power was working again. Thus, Maggie and I left Providence about two and half hours late, at about 3:30. However, we swiftly made it to the campsite. There was no one there, them being swimming, so we set up the extra tent we had bought and then the others showed up. Importantly, they had left the canoe they rented down by the lake, after having canoed some and then discovering a sign disallowing canoeing. We hung around for a while, and then made food and consumed it. After food, there was fire and a guitar. Then we went swimming, something that I had not done in about ten years. It was significantly harder than I remembered. Crucially, at this point, the canoe was down by the lake. After swimming, we returned to the tents. It began to drizzle, so we went to bed.
At some point, the tents began to leak. The leaking slowly accelerated as time passed. At about three in the morning, Maggie left to drive Jon to a supposed taxi at the edge of the park, from whence he would take the taxi to the airport and go to LA to visit some girl. Tragically, the taxi failed to exist and Maggie was forced to drive him to the airport. Upon her return, she went to sleep in the car, due to rain. Over the course of the night, all of us except Ken and Kate migrated to cars.
In the morning, we awoke bedraggledly and hung up things to dry as best we could. Eventually, Race the Galaxy was played by people who weren't me, and then when packed things up to go. The plan was that Lisa and Kate would go the canoe, take it (illegally) across the lake to where the road touched the water, and we would drive around to pick them up in our two cars. We were attempting to find the way out of the park when Kate called to inform us that the CANOE WAS GONE. We went down to the front gate to discover if they had it, and they said they did not. We thus split up, Tom and I going downstream, on the water, Ken and Maggie going to the water department, which might have confiscated it, and Lisa and Kate continuing from where they were downwind. Tom and I promptly spent forever on small roads looking for the place water. In this time, Ken called us to inform us that the canoe had been found by Kate and Lisa! Thus we eventually all met by the water, tied the canoe to one car, and drove Bostonwards. On the way, Maggie, Lisa and, in one car, stopped for lunch at a grocery store and ate in the parking lot.
In Boston we met up with Diana and Dennis Liu for Chinese food. Dinner conversation was dominated by discussion of CTY politics :-\. Then we had ice cream and people parted ways, Ken and I catching a 10:00 bus to NYC, which got in at about 1:30, and we went to his apartment to sleep.
