BBC Sherlock mini-drabble

For Day 4 of the July Writing Prompts challenge. Gen. Takes place during “The Blind Banker” episode. The obvious actor allusion is intentional.

Despite the fact that they are in the midst of this bizarre case, and despite the fact that they’re literally surrounded by towers of books, Sherlock does take a moment to observe John as he goes through the books, trying to find one that will break the cipher clue wide open.

Every so often, John pauses as he looks as one of the volumes; something in his face registers familiarity at the covers and titles. He’s read quite a few of these before, Sherlock realizes; John gives a knowing look at a military memoir, a quiet sigh of exasperation at a romance novel, and a chuckle of amusement at an old copy of The Hobbit.

But to Sherlock, the titles and authors mean nothing, save for the odd science book that pops up in the stack. Even if he has read some of these other books before, he has no recollection of their contents, having “deleted” them from his “hard drive.” This is all dull work; at least John gets some emotional escape as he remembers the ones he’s read.

Sherlock keeps his expression neutral, refusing to admit that, at this moment, he is jealous of John Watson.
