Ahhh, I'm so thrilled--I posted my first ever full-fledged Doctor Who fic last night (mini-drabbles and crossover pieces notwithstanding--didn't really count the drabbles since those aren't full fics, and I didn't really count my current Doctor Nez fic, either, since that is more Monkees-focused, in spite of River's cameos).
But, anyway, for the oneshot I posted last night, I'd been really nervous about it. I've heard from multiple sources--from one of the official novel writers and from one of the adapters of the Big Finish audio dramas, no less--that Two is the most difficult Doctor to write for. ...And that worried me because I hadn't found him difficult to write for at all, so I was legit scared for a while that I had done something wrong.
But when I checked after coming home today, I saw I'd gotten a couple reviews and favorites in FFN... and 21 likes/reblogs on tumblr.
Holy wow. Clearly, I did something right!
This is good, because I seem to be getting more and more Second Doctor plotbunnies by the day. And my latest one is a doozy... Heh. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" should not be fodder for a highly dramatic fic, and yet, my mind worked that way. Basically, Two, Jamie, and Zoe are in a futuristic Earth at a time where nearly everything is automated for convenience sake. But in one allegedly perfect community--which will more than likely be called Pleasant Valley as a shout-out to the song--things seem to be going very, very wrong, with people getting hurt by errant electronics. The Doctor suspects alien interference, but isn't sure what, and he wants to get inside the community to investigate. However, he doesn't want to attract attention, and being a two-hearted Gallifreyan could give the game away, since retinal scans/fingerprints/DNA identification will be a huge part of the ID process. So, Two decides that there's only one thing to do--use the Chameleon Arch. For those unfamiliar with the concept, the Chameleon Arch functions highly similar to Regina's Storybrooke curse--the Chameleon Arch removes/locks away a Time Lord's true memories and biological essence into a pocket watch, turning the Gallifreyan into a human--with only one heart and a set of false memories. We saw Ten use this to become "John Smith," and with that being his go-to alias, Two's human form would likely be "John Smith," as well--only reflecting more of his personality as opposed to Ten's. From what I understand, a Time Lord's TARDIS can control the false memories a Time Lord receives when he becomes human, so in order to make the charade work, Two works it out with the TARDIS to use the Chameleon Arch to become a robotics expert who happens to be a single father, looking to move into Pleasant Valley--and Jamie and Zoe playing the roles of his children. Since Jamie and Zoe will be the only ones who know the truth about who "John Smith" really is, Two will have entrusted the pocket watch to them beforehand with the instructions to be sure to get him to open it when it's time for the Doctor to return (if the affected Time Lord opens the watch, they revert back to their normal, Gallifreyan self). Of course, there will be complications, especially for Zoe--she was raised on the space station to be logical and unemotional, so it's highly likely that she spent very little time with her biological parents and, therefore, never knew parental love, and now that she knows what it's like actually having a father, she becomes reluctant of the idea of ever giving the pocket watch back so that Two can stay as John Smith forever--something with Jamie will call her out on, because even though he admits that life as a family is nice, they're still living a lie, and that the Doctor needs to return, to say nothing of the fact that the Doctor trusted them with the watch so he could return. Even more complicating is after Zoe realizes she can't be so selfish, when she and Jamie try to convince John Smith that he needs to turn back into the Doctor; John Smith doesn't want to change back because being a family man is a huge part of his human identity, and the knowledge that the Doctor has severed all ties to his real family horrifies him. When Zoe and Jamie are in danger from what has been threatening Pleasant Valley, however, he willingly opens the watch once he realizes that, as John Smith, he can't save them, but he can as the Doctor. And, of course, they all eventually come to the realization that they still are a crazy, little mixed-up family even if they aren't related by blood.
Tentative title for this is "A Change of Scenery."
For the record (and also for my own reference), here are my current Doctor Who plotbunnies (titles are all tentative):
"From the Southwestern Sky"--The Texas fic where Two, Jamie, and Zoe end up helping a fledgling town from an impending invasion.
"Prisms of No Color"--the Daily Nightly inspired fic, where Two's doppelganger, Ramon Salamander, escapes from the Time Vortex while Jamie, after a freak accident, has been having visions of the future that have been coming true without fail.
"Curiouser and Curiouser"--the OUAT crossover where Cora, trying to use magic to jump-start one of Jefferson's portal hat attempts, inadvertently pulls the TARDIS into Wonderland. Though unplanned, she now intends to get the Doctor under her control for the sole purpose of being able to use the TARDIS to get back to Regina. In the meantime, the Doctor must come to grips with his inner darkness while keeping Jamie and Zoe safe from Cora's wrath.
"A Change of Scenery"--the aforementioned Pleasant Valley Sunday inspired fic
"Smith and Nesmith"--Two, Jamie, and Zoe end up in Malibu at the request of UNIT, due to a string of alarming disappearances. Along the way, they end up joining forces with a certain ragtag quartet of musicians (guess...) as the Great Intelligence forms an unholy alliance with Mr. Zero.
"A Thousand Points of Spite"--Season 6B/post "The Two Doctors" fic; Two has reason to believe that the influences of the Androgum gene transfer that Dastari gave him haven't been eradicated as he had hoped. Jamie doesn't want to believe that he's changing into a hybrid monster for good, but he soon finds that there is very little he can do if Two continues to push him away for what he believes is his own safety.
