So, I'm working my way through the Granada Sherlock and BBC Sherlock soundtracks--they are both incredible and paint vivid pictures of everything going on!
While I haven't listened to them all yet, there is one track I need to point out as to how incredibly awesome it is. The song is called "War," and it's track three from the BBC Sherlock series 1 soundtrack. The song itself is very simple; it's divided into 4 parts, but the way the four parts are put together and what they represent musically is incredible.
It starts off with about 15 seconds of chilling drum beats--these, obviously, represent the war that John has been through, and the recurring nightmares he gets about them prior to meeting Sherlock.
When the drums end, the song launches into John's melancholy leitmotif, and it's the simple piano rendition, yet--while later versions of John's leitmotif are accompanied by other instruments and sound less sad, this piano rendition is meant to sound sad--notably, we hear this rendition twice (I think... someone correct me if I'm wrong): in the beginning of the series, when John awakens from his nightmares up until he meets Sherlock, and then in the last episode, as he's pleading with Sherlock not to jump from the roof and again after the aftermath of the jump when John is all alone again. The piano rendition of John's leitmotif is meant to signify how alone and broken he is.
The music then segues into a slow, soft rendition of Sherlock's leitmotif. It's very soft and almost... careful--nothing like the normal quirkiness of other renditions of the leitmotif, and the subsequent quirkiness of the person it represents. This soft and careful leitmotif is, in my mind, a musical representation of Sherlock slowly offering a hand of friendship to the broken soldier he's just met.
After a slow build-up, the song closes in a triumphant crescendo of Sherlock's leitmotif at its normal speed and quirkiness, as though John has accepted the hand of friendship offered to him, and now Sherlock is eagerly leading John to a world of mysteries and adventures--and John will follow loyally behind, wherever the path may lead.
One song. And it perfectly illustrates their wonderful friendship.
