So... the season premiere of Doctor Who? I won't say anything in case there are some people who haven't seen it yet, but I will say this: the ability of the writers (Steven Moffat, in this case) to successfully evoke just about every single human emotion in one hour-long ep (40 minutes, actually, once you subtract the commercial breaks) is amazing.
And, of course, I have a new appreciation for Steven Moffat. He contributed to the screenplay of last year's Tintin movie, and pretty much all of the DW eps of the Eleventh Doctor (plus "Blink," from Ten's run, which was my first introduction to the fandom). Also, it seems he is also one of the writers of the new Sherlock series on the BBC, which I have been intrigued about and would like to look into at some point...
...And the mention of Sherlock segues me to this fact: while I haven't looked into the new BBC series, I have discovered the Granada series from the '80s-'90s. To be honest, I had never really gotten into Sherlock Holmes at all. I know--gasp! Me, the male-friendship adoring mystery lover? Yep... I blame it on the Basil Rathbone movies. I tried to get into them, and I just couldn't. They didn't seem to click for me. Faye pointed out that the movies really dumbed down Watson, and I think that was what irked me.
But the Granada Series... Eee! My dad used the same tactic he used when he got me into Hogan's Heroes--force me to watch it. And the same thing happened with Sherlock Holmes that happened to Hogan's Heroes. I got the anime-hearts in my eyes and went, "Where have you been all my life?!" For starters, Watson is smart and competent--often able to read Sherlock's mind before he even says anything. And, more than that, the friendship cuteness--the friendship cuteness! There is *so* much of it.
And then there're the actors. Jeremy Brett is the perfect incarnation of Sherlock. And I may or may not be crushing on him... *headdesk*. There were two actors who played Watson--David Burke in the pre-Reichenbach first season, and Edward Hardwicke for the post-Reichenbach rest of the series. I wasn't so sure what I was going to think after the Watson switch, but I ended up adoring Edward's Watson even more than David's--likely because most of the friendship squee and h/c happened with him. I'm going to elaborate more on the friendship squee in a future post. Anyway, I finished watching all the eps. And got quite inspired by some of them. Whether or not I'll actually do something with these plunnies is another matter--I'm swamped enough already with all the Monkee plunnies I've got.
In the meantime... remember that Nuzlocke of Pokémon Sapphire that I spectacularly failed and said that I was going to restart? Well, I did indeed restart it--and the run is Sherlock Holmes-themed; I started with a Torchic (always) named Sherlock and caught a Taillow named Watson. Oh, and a Zigzagoon named after Mrs. Hudson. Currently training everyone up to take on the first Gym (rock-types... and Sherlock and Watson have 2x weakness to rock, while Mrs. Hudson has not-very-effective moves. Oh dear... This is where I hope to Arceus that Rock Tomb's less-than-perfect accuracy kicks in, or else this run will end the same way as my last one...).
