TVD just desperately needs a season-long villain that actually gets killed for good for once. Just one time, I'd like a big bad to not be incorporated into the long term fabric of the show. For me, it's just a matter of pay-off. And seeing our heroes successfully defeat someone.

This. PLEASE.

THANK YOU. I feel like I'm all alone in this thought. I know everyone and their mother loves Klaus, and I love him too, but I need a break from him. And I need our gang to actually win for once.

I had an idea that maybe Klaus could get turned human somehow (Esther brought up that possibility when she wanted to turn her children human and then kill them), and then have to deal with no longer being the strongest, most immortal guy in the room, and see what that did for him.

If our gang made it happen, it would be a win of a sort for them, and he could leave town for a bit in his despair at being powerless. Then he could come back and SLOWLY learn how to be an ok guy again, maybe pursue Caroline, whatever. That way he gets punished, he's no longer a threat to Team Elena, but they can keep him on the show.

Eh, it might be an awful idea, but it occurred to me as a way to defeat the big bad but still keep him as a recurring character since everyone adores him and Joseph Morgan so much.

I was really disappointed that Klaus is already back, TBH. I thought sealing him in the coffin was perfect. It doesn't kill him, but it gives us a break from him. And vampire Elena in S4 is more than enough to keep the story going. But I guess not. What is Klaus even going to DO in S4? He can't have a doppelganger anymore. He can make more hybrids with the blood, I guess, but THEN WHAT. If there's no doppelganger, reasons for him to stick around have just decreased dramatically, and they haven't been that good this season to begin with.

Yes, THIS. I really hope they come up with compelling story for him in Season 4, because his plot was already getting pretty meander-y in Season 3, and now a lot of his motivations are gone.

Unless it's his usual, "I'll kill everyone you've ever known" because Elena's a vamp and they dessicated him, which YAWN. We have seen this so many times and it never comes to ANYTHING.

I feel like Klaus, as fascinating a character as he is, is the definition of so much build up and no pay off, which drives me nuts.

Yes, this is basically it. He was built up as the biggest bad ever since the middle of S2, and it was believeable up until about 3.09. I thought the twist of Klaus needing Elena alive was excellent and gave him great motivation to stick around without killing everyone. But then it just got weird. I still maintain that killing Mikael was one of the biggest mistakes the show made, because I can see the Salvatores and Klaus teaming up against Mikael. Mikael was compelling, and he could have wanted to kill Elena to stop the hybrids, which no one wants to happen. Esther was a complete letdown, and even her big bad plot didn't go anywhere.

You've got a good point about Mikael, and I honestly thought that's where the story was going until he was killed, and I was really excited about it. Plus, why get an amazing actor like Sebastian Roche and then not use him more?

And I COMPLETELY AGREE about Esther, ugh, plus that actress was just so bad. I read someone's review of an episode that described her as saying every line as if each word was capitalized, and it's SO TRUE. "I Will Kill My Children, Because They Are Abominations."

The only cool thing that came out of Esther's storyline was the revelation about the bloodlines and her wanting to kill ALL vampires, which was a nice game changer.

I don't think we've had an actress that bad on TVD until now.

Plus, Mikael had the whole 'only feeds on vampires' angle going. He was INTERESTING. I wanted him to come to town, kick Klaus' ass, free his family (though they could still hate him), and then start trying to kill the doppelganger. Elijah would be opposed, of course.

PERFECTION. Then we could have had some really cool family conflict once all the siblings are undaggered, instead of the unsatisfying "oh we're all working together now because our mom wants us to be a family, oh, and now we're working together because our mom wants to kill us ( ... )

I never got the daggering/undaggering siblings things, TBH. In S2, it made it sound like Klaus killed them because they rejected him, but then by S3 (when we've woobified him) he killed them to keep them until he had hybrids? Then he's ready to release them? He wants hybrids so he doesn't have to be alone but he wants his real family, too, even though he technically had them for years and could have had them at any time. That makes no sense to me.

Yeah, it was all very confusing after a while. I'm hoping upon rewatching all the Season 3 episodes back to back, it will make a little more sense, emotional-character-journey wise. Cause I just couldn't keep track of Klaus' emotional problems, TBH.

Besides his obsession with not being alone and wanting to be Stefan's boyfriend, that is. Those aspects of his personality were pretty consistent.
