I have some time before rehearsal today, so here I go with more TVD finale commentary.
- It's sooo nice to see Jeremy and Matt talking on the porch like this, and so realistic. It's about time we see the humans make decisions on their own without the Salvatores. I mean, I'm team vampire as much as I'm team human, and I love when everybody bands together, but I also like when there's this push and pull between the two groups. As much as I adore Damon and Stefan and their complete lack of boundaries when it comes to Elena, Matt and Jeremy were in her life first and it makes complete sense for them to want to protect her on their own, to make their own plan. They both have just as legitimate roles in her life, and it's gratifying to see the narrative support that. Also, I'm just giddy that Matt is finally included in all this. LOVE HIM.
- Although, this strikes me as a completely inauthentic fake-out with Matt saying he knows where Klaus is. Just like with Jeremy, never for one second would I believe that Matt would contemplate going along with Alaric's plan if it meant Caroline and Tyler's deaths, even if it saved Elena's life. I mean, maaaaybe Jeremy would, since Elena's his last family member, but for sure Matt wouldn't, no matter how much he loves Elena. So instead of being in suspense when Jeremy makes the phone call, I was just incredibly confused, like "the show doesn't really expect me to believe Matt and Jeremy would go for this, right?" Of course, it was all part of the bigger plan anyway, but the fake-out still doesn't make sense to me. Like, are we supposed to think that Jeremy and Matt considered letting Alaric kill all the vampires (including Caroline and Tyler and Bonnie's mom) and then eventually decided against it and just agreed to get Elena out of town when they got a chance? That doesn't ring true for me character-wise AT ALL. Anyone got an explanation?
- Yay for Elijah being part of the group again! So nice to see him planning and scheming with our main characters. I WANT THIS FOR ALWAYS. Plus, he just classes up the joint.
- Aargh, Caroline and Tyler are so adorably and teenager-y happy as they talk about running away together, you just know shit's about to go down. LOL, though, at Tyler saying he'll protect her. That's sweet, dude, but believe me, she'll be protecting you. And that curling iron line is so Caroline. She is just rainbows and puppies and everything wonderful.
- "I'll call Bonnie." Hmmmm. Does Bonnie get the call while she's with Klaus's body? Is that when the Tyler/Klaus plan is created? Does Tyler volunteer? If not, why does Bonnie pick Tyler? Is Tyler still in his body somewhere once Bonnie does the spell? SO MANY QUESTIONS.
- Damon's facial expression as he leaves Bonnie alone with Klaus' body is hilarious.
- Bonnie is so intense and hateful towards Klaus, and it's amazing. More characters need to hate him with this intensity, it would make more sense when they implement their umpteenth plan to destroy him.
- I'm also loving seeing Klaus completely impotent and having to listen to other people tell him how awful he is. He takes control away from so many other characters that it's immensely satisfying to see the shoe on the other foot. Karma's a bitch. I start disconnecting with characters when they don't get any comeuppance, so even though this won't last, it makes me happy.
- I've seen some complaining about how the location of the storage unit makes no sense, since Bonnie and Rebekah are able to get back to Mystic Falls, but Damon doesn't have time to. It's definitely a little iffy, geography wise, but I can kind of buy it, since I'm assuming Bonnie leaves right after her one-on-one Klaus time (and thus has more time to get back), whereas Damon waits around for Rebekah to arrive. And as far as Rebekah getting back to MF, eh, I can wank it that she has super fast Original running powers.
- Considering Bonnie's actions in this episode, I'd love a dark Bonnie storyline. But I'm not sure if the show will go there.
- I'm just now realizing that Elena and Stefan haven't had one kiss this season, so it's actually nice to see this moment between them. Still don't feel like it's quite earned, but it makes sense to me that Stefan would go for it, considering he thinks this might be his last chance. And his face when they pull apart is kind of awesome, like, he's been holding in the urge to do that for a long ass time and it feels amazing to finally give in. Elena just looks super confused and overwhelmed.
- Yep, Damon says Bonnie had just left during his phone conversation with Stefan, so Bonnie was traveling back to MF while Damon was out of commission and Alaric was searching all the storage lockers, while the whole Alaric/Damon/Rebekah showdown happened, while Matt was talking to and then drugging and kidnapping Elena. So the logistics work for me.
- Though the show hammers it home way too overbearingly, it is true that Damon's willingness to piss off Elena to keep her safe is a huge difference between himself and Stefan. Damon would not have listened to her and saved Matt first if he'd been there when the car crashed. But I think, in some ways, both of their philosophies are born of selfishness. Stefan (maybe unconsciously) selfishly wants to maintain Elena's good opinion of him once he has it, he wants to be who she sees him as, the selfless hero, the boyfriend who respects her agency, etc, he wants to be the person who "does the right thing." And Damon wants her alive, even if she's miserable because of it.
- Aaand Damon gets his neck snapped. It's kinda fitting that Alaric finally gets to do it, even if it's not really Alaric.
- I overhoneyed? Oh, Matt Donovan, I love you.
- It's a little ridiculous that Elena constantly uses her ex-boyfriend as a sounding board for her current boy troubles, but I also kind of love it. Matt's also been her friend since she was born, so he's not just her ex, and he listens without judging, which Elena needs. Plus, I'm glad for any glimpse into her thoughts when it comes to her Salvatore dilemma.
- I really love how she describes her love for first Stefan and then Damon. Both ring very very true to me. However, Elena, YOU CAN LOVE THEM BOTH. Seriously. THREESOMES SOLVE EVERYTHING.
- "I just, I wish that I had my mom here. To give me some advice." SOBS. Matt's face at this? MORE SOBS. Ugh, these poor babies.
Part 1Part 3 And that's it for now, I gotta run. Hopefully more tonight? This is getting ridiculous, I'm only half way through the episode. I HAVE TOO MANY THOUGHTS.
