I have this idea for a halloween costume to wear to a computer conference halloween ball in san diego. I need feedback to judge how wacky it sounds. It's basically two feminist movements in one costume, which is an interesting thing to wear to a male-dominated conference.
Overview:
a gorilla head, a bikini top, normal pants/skirt, with the word 'BITCH' or 'SLUT' written in big letters across my stomach.
The Explanation:
The gorilla head is a homage to the Guerilla Girls art/feminist activism group, that protested the male-dominated art hierarchy in the NYC art scene.
They put out stickers that said things like "Do women have to be naked to get into the Met?" that explained that less than 2% of artists in the Met are women, but 95% of the paintings in the classical paintings section had naked women in them. They also wore gorilla heads to their weddings and other social occasions to keep their anonymity.
The bikini top/bitch on stomach part is a tribute to the riot grrrrl movement. It is aping a picture of Kathleen Hanna, lead singer of Bikini Kill and riot grrrrl champion, who was wearing a bikini top with the word 'SLUT' written across her stomach. It's a confrontation of what people will think of her anyways by putting it in big letters in a vulnerable place of her body.
What do you all think?
