30 Days of Fan Fiction meme, Day 1
Saw this meme floating around the f-list and thought I'd give it a shot. Probably won't be 30 consecutive days though. Anyone know where it came from originally? Just curious.
1 - How did you first get into writing fanfic, and what was the first fandom you wrote for? What do you think it was about that fandom that pulled you in?
Oh boy. My very, very first foray into fanfic was because of an 8th grade class trip to New York City. We saw Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and I fell in love: with the story, the characters, the music--I was gone. Fast forward to getting back home, I decided to write about my experience at seeing my first Broadway musical, and this I sort of count as my first fanfic because it was me writing about a fannish subject with only enthusiasm to guide me.
I don't remember the exact train of events after that, but I'm pretty sure I probably started looking for more POTO stuff on the internet and probably came across my first fanfic there. I don't remember writing anything else during that time, but in high school, I was still obsessed. Freshman year, I wrote a highschool AU that is still up on my fanfic.net profile and still gets reviews (oh wow, that means I've been a memeber of fanfiction.net for over 10 years... O_O). That's also the reason I started this LJ with the name "rose_in_shadow" (cause I wanted something phantomesque lol).
What pulled me in? Well, I've always loved to read - always been drawn in by fascinating characters and plot. Redemption stories - POTO is sort of one - also draw me in. In the case of POTO, I think I was also an nerdy, introverted teenager on an emotional high from being in NYC and just... gravitated to something that moved me deeply at the time.
It's funny: having a first fandom is rather like being in love - this thing is special and you can't imagine ever not feeling the way you do in that moment, at that moment. But my love for my first fandom faded - I think later in high school - and of course, got replaced by other things. :D
