Work of Art Wednesday - something new?

Apr 12, 2006 18:50

I had a sudden urge to post random thoughts about random works of art. If I don't grow bored with it, maybe I'll do it every week! Yay!

Disclaimer: I will never choose art that is obsene, so you may view with safety. There might occasionally be mild nudity, but no porn. I'll post a warning if there is nudity. That aside, I am not a art student and couldn't paint to save my life. My opinions expressed are simply that, opinions and I am bound to misunderstand stuff, but I think that's part of the interest of art.

Today's work of art: Piss Christ by Andres Serrano.

When I first heard about this controversial work of art, I had the typical Christian knee-jerk reaction: Blasphemey! Sacriledge! Etc etc. But a professor in one of my classes a couple of years ago pointed out something that I'd never considered before. Could "Piss Christ" actually be a work of profound religious significance?

The crucifix with our Lord on it is suspended in a jar of urine. Aethetically, the picture is not ugly to look at. The reddish color is nice and the crucifix seems to glow. It's only when one learns what the stuff is that the disgust comes. But isn't that exactly what Christ did? He stepped from his light-filled throne room in Heaven and inserted Himself in the stinking filth of our sin.

art, faith
