Awwww, Sammy!

Battlestar Galactica this week

I'm going to use the name Athena for Sharon Agathon, even though I'm not a huge fan of calling her that. Too many Eights in this episode to keep them straight.

the Demetrius and baseship

We immediately return to the mutiny aboard the Demetrius. Kara is mad at Helo; Athena grabs Kara by the neck--scary! Sam is freaking out (he does that a lot!) and as Gaeta tries to jump the ship back to the Galactica, Sam shoots him in the leg!

Kara gets out of Athena's grasp and immediately goes to help Gaeta. (Oooky, bleurgh.) Sam is freaking out more--rubbing his head while clutching the gun, which reminds me of Galen Tyrol in last week's episode. Kara takes a moment and tells Helo that he was right not to jump the whole ship to the basestar. Instead she wants to take a Raptor and bring Leoben with her to check out the situation. Anders volunteers immediately, Athena is persuaded to go as well because Kara needs someone who 'speaks their language.' The clock is running, though--fifteen hours until they must leave to rejoin the Galactica.

Whew! *wipes brow* All that before the opening credits!

Loading up the Raptor--Leoben tells Athena that the other Eights talk about her all the time! Hee! She's like the sister who ran away from home and all the remaining sisters are secretly jealous of her glamourous rebel nature. Jean Barolay goes into the Raptor, volunteering for the mission. Apparently she's 1) a pilot now and 2) a Kara fan. Also 3) a redshirt, as identified by pataka02 during an AIM conversation this last week. So my reaction to Jean going on the Raptor: NOOOOOO, don't do it, Jean! *sigh*

The raptor jumps, right into a bunch of battle refuse. Kara says that this is the place--she's almost giddy with the recognition. Leoben makes some worshipful comment about his Angel: "Kara's one of the few" who can hear the Special Destiny music. Heh. Oooh, the 'comet' Kara saw was the baseship! We see the gas giant and the triple suns that Kara painted. The raptor gets hit by shrapnel and Kara's knocked out.

Kara comes to while being tended by her cylon fanboys Sam and Leoben. The raptor is inside the baseship.

Athena checks out the raptor, is approached by the other Eights, who want her to lead a mutiny against the Sixes! Good grief! Once the cylons start a civil war, they don't play around. Athena tells them to stick to their choices.

Natalie doesn't want to let Kara meet the hybrid; Leoben and Kara win the argument. It appears a temporary alliance has already been formed. Hee, apparently all the Twos are, in fact, obsessed with Kara. Rats--I had other (silly) theories--though this as canon makes me laugh, too.

Athena uses the goo-filled console to determine that they need to take the hybrid offline. Kara and Athena give various commands. Sam's hand edges toward the console... Frodo, don't wear the ring! Sam, don't touch the goo! I am very curious to see what would happen, but now is not the time.

Jean gets to work on the Raptor. As usual, she's hot, capable and taciturn. A Six picks a fight with her, Jean is truculent, and Six kills her. NOOOOOOO! And dang, that was quick. Aww, Jean!

Oh, Sammy! *cries* He draws a gun on the Six. Interesting that Athena also draws a gun to keep the others (Kara, Natalie, some Eights) from interfering with Sam. She even takes Sam's side verbally when Kara tries to talk him down.

He doesn't holster his gun, though; not even when she tries calling him soldier. Hey Kara, Sam didn't join the military when he was still in his teens--he wasn't trained to respond the way you were. Also, this is Jean who was just killed. She lived through Caprica and New Caprica to die like this?!

Anyway, Natalie-Six interferes. The other Six identifies Barolay as the one who drowned her on New Caprica. My sympathy is entirely with Jean and Sam on this. So: blah blah blah PTSD, "we were trying to help them on New Caprica," etcetera.

The other Six says, "I'm glad it's you," to Natalie, who then kisses her. I was expecting a neck snap. Instead Natalie stands and pulls the trigger on Sam's gun.

Sam, Athena and the other Eights are shocked. Natalie asks if that's enough human justice, and she walks away.

Moving on: Leoben can't wait to introduce his two girlfriends to each other! *laughs* But the hybrid isn't excited about meeting the other woman in Leoben's life and doesn't say anything relevant (apparently--though how would I know?!). Leoben reassures Kara that it takes time, but they don't really have time to spare. As an Eight starts to unplug the hybrid, a centurion fires on her. Eight's blood drips into the tank, the hybrid continues to scream, and Kara kneels and leans directly over her, asking for information. She gets: harbinger of death, lead humanity to its end, dying leader, opera house, three to five and thirteen. Yeah. It's almost that confusing in the actual dialogue.

The Eight shot by the centurion is dying. Sam is drawn to her, looking for humanity and meaning in her death. When Athena refuses to comfort her, Sam steps in. Awwww, Sammy!

Leoben, Natalie and Kara figure out that the 'three' is the boxed cylon model, which can lead them to the 'five' unknown cylons, who in turn should know the way to Earth, the 'thirteenth' colony. Sam is freaked out yet again. Awwww, Sammy!

The basestar jumps back to the Demetrius right after the clock ran down. So, last minute rendez-vous with Galactica next week?

Laura in sickbay

Roslin meetes a patient whose name is Emily. They bond over the mean nurse. Emily takes exception to Laura wanting to turn off her radio (she's listening to Gaius Baltar preach). Later Emily tells Laura why she listens to Gaius Baltar--it's because she had a dream of crossing a river on a ferry. By the way, the actress playing Emily looks and sounds a lot like the one who played the Oracle on New Caprica--the one who talked to D'Anna Biers. Apparently it's not the same woman, though.

The story of the ferry reminds me of Greek mythology. The look of the scene makes me think of a painting by Rembrandt--the scarf on Laura's head, the muted grey fabric as backdrop. It's strikingly lovely.

Emily expresses cynicism about the Greek Gods of Kobol, and thinks that a one true God makes sense, even if that information does come from Gaius Baltar. Even if that God is the same as the Cylon God, because 'He belongs to all of us.'

Laura talks about her mother, about the bleak end filled with terror. Emily points out that it was Laura's terror, not her mother's, and that Laura is still searching. Emily can't continue talking because she has some kind of attack. Her own end is imminent.

Laura dreams of Emily and herself on the ferry. Emily joins her family on the shore. Laura sees her own family there as well. She's so happy. I got teary-eyed at this. She tells her mother that she's not ready yet. She wakes up in sickbay to the sound of Gaius Baltar on the radio, talking about streams! He's channeling Leoben!

The upshot of all of this: Laura goes to Bill and talks about Baltar, about the overdue Demetrius and Earth. Bill tells Laura that she made him change, made him believe. Awwwww, Bill!

but what does it all mean?

It means that I should get more Leoben next week, right? Because if the basestar jumps to the Galactica, we get all the cylons who are on it as well! Whee!

Were you expecting me to say something else here?!

leoben, bsg
