"Marley was dead, to begin with." Isn't that one of the best opening lines ever?! So what's your favorite movie version of A Christmas Carol? I ask because, sadly, the only version I own and have watched in its entirety is A Muppet Christmas Carol. Gonzo really is an awesome Charles Dickens, ("I know Dickens like the back of my hand.") but ( Read more... )

Dude, I've seen plenty of versions of A Christmas Carol, and A Muppet Christmas Carol is STILL my favorite. I'm all for keeping Dickens light-hearted.

Heh, I'm glad I'm not the only one who loves that version. Go Muppets!

Hee. We have, as far as I know, every version available to humankind, including the one-offs like Scrooged. And as an added bonus, I got a copy of the book for my husband for Christmas. I'm amazed at how much he loves that story. He even took me to see the off Broadway version a couple of weeks ago.

That's a lot of dedication to the story. Hey, your husband takes you to the theatre?! Wow.

I like them all too. But I like the scary black & white one the best. When I was little the Ghost of Christmas Future use to scare me because it never said anything, just pointed. But I couldn't look away though. That seemed like the grimmest and most real version but probably because I saw it first.

And I like the versions that show Ignorance and Want under Christmas Present's robes. Gritty and real and dark. (I like the colorful musicals too, I do!) But I think these versions remind me most of Dickens.

Life was definitely dark in many ways during Dickens' life, so it would be fitting to match the tone.

Man, that book is so descriptive, sometimes I feel cold just reading it.

I like the old black-and-white one, personally. Probably because I grew up watching it every year, along with It's A Wonderful Life. Though it starts with "Old Marley Was as Dead as a Doornail," like the book. :D

Any movie version that quotes from the first page of the book gets high marks from me. I want to have that sense of Dicken's writing style be present.

Oh, It's a Wonderful Life is definitely a favorite. I realize everyone says that, but it's true. (I didn't see it for the first time until I was 21, which kind of boggles the mind. Not sure how I managed to miss it before then.)
