The Expanse 1.09 - a turning point
Unrelated to the rest of this post: I deleted my tumblr account almost a week ago, and then remade an account with the same name. I hated the idea that my online name of 13 years might be taken and used by bots. Anyway, it's sitting there doing nothing, which is fine.
I'm still rewatching The Expanse. I was still finding myself annoyed with Detective Miller, until magically in this episode when we get to 'meet' Julie Mao. She dies, but she also lives: desperate and dedicated, working for a cause that few Earthers would ever espouse. Something about seeing Julie in action makes Miller's obsession a lot more understandable. Not to mention that the stakes are suddenly much higher: I know what's about to happen on Eros station, so shooting a few corrupt cops along the way to get some answers? It seems less reprehensible than the first time around.
Oh! I was gonna talk about Florence Faivre. See, I've seen her before: on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., where her character died. And given the general trend in television of casting characters of color in "disposable" roles, I figured she would be dying at some point during this show as well: an accurate guess. Anyway, she spent her early years in southern France, finished high school in Thailand, where she also began a media career at a young age; and now does a lot of English-language television and film. And she is thoroughly impressive in those roles where I've seen her. Julie Mao is--rather literally--a haunting character.
(I am amused that Faivre, a French-Thai actress, and Nadine Nicole, a Filipina-American actress, play sisters with--presumably--Chinese heritage on The Expanse.)
