movies for kids

In the last two months I've seen three kids' movies. It's a lot, considering that I don't have kids.

Frozen: aesthetically boring, and not much better with plot. What was up with how the human characters look and sound white, but then some of the trolls sound like black Americans? And I cannot stand the fixer-upper song, but it's also horribly catchy, so it's hard to even mention it without that music jumping back into my brain.

It was so mediocre. Here's to hoping that the sequel has a stronger plot. The visuals already look better, although it still lacks a certain oomph in the trailer.

Coco made me cry. It was a bit of a rocky start for me as viewer, but then it improved. Miguel was adorable, the visuals were good, and I cried at that version of "Remember Me" that we're supposed to cry at. A solid B, maybe even B+.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold was a mixed bag, but the leading actress knocked it out of the ballpark. Isabela Moner is a tiny powerhouse, my goodness. Also, the storyline was surprisingly well-informed about Peru; Quechua language was spoken, and Quechua myths used to create key visual and plot elements... but again, a lot of what happened was very much directed at a young audience. So you have to have a good tolerance for a lot of what that entails.
