quick book review, some TV thoughts and links

I finally finished reading Inheritance, by Christopher Paolini. While I enjoyed the books, they didn't have the resonance that, oh, Lord of the Rings has, for example. Perhaps if I were in the age bracket of the target audience, I'd feel more strongly attached. Paolini does have nicely clear prose--a necessity since he's doing a lot of world-building and battle scenes. I didn't ever skim the fights out of confusion over what was happening.

Pros: dragons, elves, epic good versus evil
Cons: rather long and part of the fight is won with *feelings* and I giggled a bit too much over that (it works, but...)
pro or con?: the ending doesn't include "and they lived happily ever after together" Some of my students resented this; others found it perfectly fine. I've gone back and forth about it, which amuses me a lot, since I'm usually the one who wants ALL THE DEPRESSING ENDINGS EVER. Except when I don't, so... *shrugs*

Non-spoilery reason to read: Nasuada is awesome. And Arya. And Angela. In other words, if you can make it through book one, which is strictly Eragon's POV, there are more women involved in the story, and they're vital to the plot.

TV: Ultraviolet 1.02 "In Nomine Patris" recap. I was in a hurry when I wrote it, so it's a fairly straightforward summary of events.

While I was visiting friends at the end of Spring break, I ended up watching Once Upon a Time 1.15. The last episode I watched in its entirety was 1.10, so I'm missing four episodes. This one had Ruby backstory (finally!) and I enjoyed it... but not enough to feel compelled to catch up or keep watching. I would watch the Ruby and Emma fight crime! show, however.

Poor Ruby. So I guess being a werewolf in FT land doesn't translate into being a werewolf on this side? Let me know if it does, because I'd find that interesting.
We can be slaves, or we can be... lycans!

I saw a commercial for Missing while watching OUaT, and I'm curious enough to check it out at some point. Former spies seem to be a thing right now, yeah? I'm okay with this theme.

Speaking of that, I'll post Carter/Reese kiss and not make up fic tomorrow morning.
