Ultraviolet: because killing vampires is more fun with technology

Mar 06, 2012 20:01

Either tomorrow or Thursday I'll post a recap of episode one of Ultraviolet. And it will be a week before the next post, which means you have lots of time to catch up! And why exactly should you make an effort to watch random 1990's British TV? I'm glad you asked... except for how I should be working on that to-do list, so this is going to be quick.

Four Reasons to Watch Ultraviolet

1. plot and characterization With only six episodes, the show keeps a tight, narrow focus on essentials. There are only four principal cast members and a few recurring characters.

2. vampires that are and are not traditional Ultraviolet keeps the 'rules' of vampires and applies pseudo-scientific explanations for how those rules work, yet the vampires themselves are not static, lurking monsters. (By the way, the word vampire is never used in the show.) They're intelligent and willing to use technology themselves to advance... whatever it is they're trying to advance. Which brings me to number three.

3. shades of gray Are the humans who fight against the "Code V" justified? Do the Code V have something in mind other than making humanity their lunch ticket? How far is too far when fighting a hidden war?

4. pretty people (with bonus subtle pining) Susannah Harker (Jane Bennet in the One True version of Pride & Prejudice), Idris Elba (nothing more to say other than his name, right?!), Jack Davenport (Norrington!) and Philip Quast. I don't know Quast's other work, but looking at screencaps reminded me that there's a reason why people shipped him with Angie. Even though I think those people are clearly wrong. ;-P
