There will be no New Testament post today. Mostly because we spent thirty minutes talking about these five or six words: The Gospel According to St. Matthew. (Well, I said a post once a month was my goal anyway. I hope the pace of the class picks up, because this is a bit ridiculous so far...)
So! Apparently I'm in a Young Adult book bind. At the end of 2010 I finally finished reading Eldest, which is the second book in the Eragon series.
I still think Arya is fascinating, and Nasuada is brilliant... and we spend most of the time reading about Eragon and Roran. I went into this book thinking it was awesome, but by the end I was frustrated, simply because it went on so long. I'm not sure what Paolini should cut; this isn't one of those obvious cases like Breaking Dawn, where anyone could see that the glowing descriptions of Edward could and should be condensed.
I'll read the next book, though. I like the world created in this series and I'm invested in it being changed for the better. I do like Eragon; I'm just not sure I want to spend so much time in his head.
And so far in 2011 I've finished one book (that I started in 2010): Zahrah the Windseeker, by Nnedi Okorafor-Mbachu.
This was a book that had me hooked enough to want to skip to the end, but interested enough in the journey that I didn't. And yeah, I was fairly certain of how some of the ending would go the whole time, but it was a well-earned conclusion by then.
Just a bit more without trying to spoil much: a stubborn female protagonist, friendship, mysterious jungles with mysterious and dangerous creatures, alternate universes... I wouldn't mind reading more in this world.
