Enough about the long drawn-out exit of RTD as lead writer David Tennant as Ten. (Just kidding--I'm sad too.) Now it's time to talk about the most important 97 seconds of Doctor Who this year... the reappearance of Jack!

I'm a bit jaded about the fact that we're oh-so-eager to show that the society of the future has "gotten over" homophobia but not as eager, apparently, to combat sexism, classism, or racism.
Yes, I agree with you, but luckily that doesn't stop me from enjoying DW fandom! However, now I do wish that I could fandom-convert you, because I want to discuss all sorts of things about race/class/gender in DW with you. *wry smile* Just one note: the "society of the future" in DW is actually a bit more complex than I made it sound. Supposedly, after several thousand years of space travel--mixing with (and sometimes shagging) aliens--people stop paying attention to earlier human divisions of gender, sexual orientation, and race; but other kinds of hierarchy (including new class divisions) remain. Is this just the sci fi version of "getting over" homophobia? An outer space version of the Human Rights Campaign/NY Times Style section upper-middle-class gay politics? I'm not sure. Still, it's the idea a sexually fluid/queer action hero that's gotten the most attention in DW fanfic and media response... and that particular DW storyline is indeed the product of white, middle-class, gay men.

Okay, enough pushing DW discussion on you. *hugs*

Classes don't start until the last week of Jan, but I'm so stressed about writing the job talk, and run-down from the conference marathon. (Ugh.) How are you doing, and when do your classes start? I'm going to call you in the next few days!

Ah, see, I'll believe this when the protagonist isn't a middle-class white man. Really. Nothing else is going to get me to take it even halfway seriously. (And even then I'm going to be a hard sell.)

But we do need to find a common fandom! Because I like discussing these things when I, ahem, have some idea what I'm talking about. *smile*

J-term started Monday and runs for four weeks. Gah, I wish we had January off the way you do. *curses the universe*

I'm around this weekend--are you? M.

I guess I'll have to revisit HP fandom for the pleasure of "dissecting" with you. This was fun, though!

J-term... oh no! *shakes fist at universe for mistreating Maggie* I hope you're hanging in there! This weekend, my only plan is to write my job talk... so I'm technically free, but may be frantic. Please call if you're free, and we'll see what happens.
