5. Yep. A car is everything to most teenage boys. For that, Sam's like most high-schoolers (at least, the stereotypical version).
6. Mile's is the ficlet you think is the best? True, he does have some thoughts to not showing up in the sequels and being kicked out when he was. (And yes, Sam could have done with a friend from High school or even a rival he knew from before).
Sam's arrogance poked its ugly head out during the TF one, showed up a bit during TF two, and is majorly evident in TF three.

4. Sometimes one really notices the change of writers. It makes thinks more diverse, but also fractures the canon verse.
6. Yes, I think it was the best, because it really was a scene with something to "tell". A scene that didn't need more words than it had, but also not less. A scene that showed an important moment of a character and explained his feelings, his motives and his goals.
... I liked Miles more than Sam. :)
