Title: Afterwards
Characters: Kanan Jarrus, Rex
Continuity: Star Wars Rebels - post Malachor (pre S3)
Author: Rose0mary
Rating: K+
Summary:  Malachor left more scars than just physical wounds.

Saying it aloud made the situation permanent somehow.  “I’m blind.”

“Coming back from Malachor with lightsaber burns across your face, I’m not surprised.”

Kanan didn’t need eyes to see Rex sitting down on the seat across from him - he could hear the springs creak as the old clone settled his weight on the lightly cushioned surface.

“I did hear Anakin and Obi-Wan talk about Malachor once or twice.”  Rex commented softly, “Something about dead planets that eat unwanted force-sensitive’s.”

“It killed Asoka.”

“Vader killed Tano - not the planet.”

Kanan turned his head away from the scarred soldier.  “How am I supposed to fight if I can’t see?”

“Teach others,” Rex replied, “talk to Wolffe - he might have some suggestions on replacements.”

“I’m blind.” Kanan reiterated.  “It’s not just the corona.  It’s the optic nerves - total cauterization.”

That news made Rex shut up.  “You almost lost more than just your eyesight.”  He whispered, in shock and awe.

“Yeah, and if I had been a microsecond slower, Maul would have taken more than just my eyes.”

“Well, I’m just glad you did survive - you and Ezra both.”

The chair squeaked as it’s inhabitant got up.  “I’ll still ask Wolffe if he has contacts for new eyes - he has some experience in lost vision.”

“One eye is not both.”

“No - it’s not.”

Kanan knew Rex had left when the footsteps faded away.   How was he supposed to help others when he couldn’t even heal his own body?   The healing trance had stopped further damage from occurring after the burns had cooled - but had done nothing to restore his sight.
