Life Thrives

Late at night, a yellow Camero zoomed down the freeway. The driver did no harm, and expertly weaved in and out of the scant traffic on the roads.  Bumblebee liked the solace of night. Daytime brought its own comfort, but the nighttime of earth felt magical and special.

Despite the stark contrast between night and day, there was still much to do; nocturnal animals came awake after the sun fell, even as the majority of human-businesses shut down for the evening and other activity was put on hold. This reminded the ‘bots that earth lived its own rhythm; for those old enough to remember Cybertron while it still had a sun, this was a nice reminder of home, while the youngest found the s separation between recharge and wakefulness wonderful (and, at times, startling). Bee chose not to ‘shut down’ when the humans did, and kept his own internal circular rhythm of time. Now, with Sam asleep, he could explore and learn.

The Internet might have facilitated communication between the humans and Transformers, but the information woven in the world wide electronic web did nothing to describe the world he now found himself in and a part of.

Just last week, the nearby arid and barren region had received a massive amount of rain. So much rain had fallen in such a short period of time that the roads had been buried under mud and debris by flashfloods. Now, with the roads cleared and ready for traffic once more, Bee went to explore the land, to see what changes had arisen due to the natural precipitation.

Bumblebee found rain exhilarating. He enjoyed the sunlight. The snowstorm surprised him, as did the mild whirlwind (shortly before he encountered the natural whirlwind, the radio stations had issued a ‘tornado’ alert. He had been shocked watching parked cars lifted off the ground, but that was it). Heavy clouds did not bother Bee. Earth, with its various climatic conditions and weather patterns, interested him. Even without the presence of humans and their legacy, earth felt alive and welcoming.

Passing a splosh of color in the desert, Bumblebee scanned all around him.  The fact that he happened to be inn the middle of the freeway did not stop him from changing course abruptly.  With no cars behind him, none in front, and nothing man-made moving within scanning distance, Bumblebee screeched to a halt. Unfolding from his car form, the yellow mech stepped off the road and onto the sandy ground that lined the freeway. The sight before him was astonishing.

Before the rains, he would have said that a desert could hold no life, that it was a miracle that any animals could survive. Bee thought it astonishing that the few spiky plants growing could call this place home. Now, after the rains, he took most of his negative thoughts about this barren, inhospitable, sandy, badlands back.

Even without the sunlight illuminating the sandy dunes and land, he could still see the plants that decorated the landscape. Many of the flowers were starting to bloom - orange flowers, splotches of yellow, pockets of purples and blues. Before the rains, this had been a nasty brown pile of land, as far as the eye could see. Now, it was a sea of green, broken by faint traces of future color.

As far as his sensors could reach, this entire place had transformed - virtually overnight - from a wasteland that grew nothing, to a rich paradise that beckoned earnestly. This is why he fell in love with earth. Even in the harshest conditions, life thrived and held on, refusing to bow down and die.
