March's Reading list

Apr 17, 2015 19:06

In an earlier post, I have meantioned one of the books I read in March:
Jim K's Big Red - a very well written story that I will want to pick up again some time in the future.  (And maybe a book I'd like to share with future generations).

Another book I really liked is Michael Morpugo's War Horse - Nicely done storytelling.
It brought history to life, and made it very hard to believe that the events depicted didn't, couldn't have happened.  I haven't found too many belivable stories done from the horse's point-of-view, and the way Michael Morpurgo wrote it, it felt very much like an (auto)biography, straight from the horse's mouth.
Reccomending War Horse (I believe it was published in 1982), to anyone who's looking for a short, but very compelling tale - and fair warning: BYOT while reading.

Piers Anthony's Faun And Games is not as funny as I rememeber - and had a bit more puns than I wanted.  (his later Xanth books do have pages where puns reign surpreme, and they don't feel as well written, nor as characterly-involved as the first nine or so in the still-ongoing series).
This one, not as good as others - (beginning to wonder if my tastes have changed; if so, I am hesitant to pick up Man from Mundania, cause I liked that one while in High-School and for a few years beyond.  Really don't want to find out that I hate it now).
Will NOT read again.

Space Stations is an anthology selection - various authors (14 contributors) and it's of mixed feelings.  Some of the short stories (yes, short stories, not novellas), I liked, others I didn't care for at all.
Overall impression: not reading again.

Wondrous Beginnings: Another collection from some wonderful Authors in the Science-Ficition Genre.  Some of the authors and their works I liked, others were not so welcoming.  Not worth buying, IMHO.

Star Trek: Shockwave - Novelization by Paul Rudits.  (Screenplay, Rick Berman and Brannon Braga) - yeah, now I remember why I don't like Novelizations in general.  Wanted to give the Star Trek: Enterprise universe another go (cause the TV show didn't enthrall me), and came to realize I never missed out bypassing the stories placed before Captain Kirk of the Original Series.

Star Trek: Gemini - Mick W. Barr
Not one in the Original verse (Captain James T. Kirk series) I'll pick up again.
Felt (to me) cliche' and ... missing something.

And last, but not least:
Justin Morgan Had A Horse: Marguerite Henry
A child's book?  Perhaps.  But a good read, and a nice afternoon's diversion.
Loved the historical setting, and the way Marguerite Henry made the biography of the 'American Horse (breed)' a fun story, while not diverging from what facts she could find and collaborate.

So, to summarize:
March had 8 (eight) books.
Three (3), I loved and might search out more books by those authors, Five (5) were toss-ups, in my opinion.  Oh well, hard to find out what I don't like if I refuse to pick up books beyond those I know I love and cherish.
