"As with previous years' MTV Asia Awards, the stars who did turn up were almost guaranteed a sweetener for doing so.
Some of the upsets though, were too spectacular to ignore.
While Britain's Pop Idol runner-up Gareth Gates got some of the night's most rapturous applause, it remains a mystery as to how he could have won Favourite Male Artist.
His competition were strong contenders: Grammy winners Justin Timberlake, Eminem, Ricky Martin, as well as Britain's best-selling male artist Robbie Williams.
Teacher Kenneth Teo, 36, who was there with his wife and daughter, said that while he was not familiar with some of the singers, he could not believe the results.
"Look at the number of people who cheered when they saw Justin Timberlake's video, against those who cheered for Gates. Gates got it because he attended the show," he speculated.
Junior college student Lily Khoo, 18, also noticed that "MTV kept repeating Gareth Gates' music videos for two weeks non-stop before the show"."
So if Justin turned up, he would have gotten the awards, not only for Favourite Male but also for Favourite Video. And also the Fashion Icon. Plus Most Influential Artist. Not to forget the Inspiration Award. Gah
