Wow it's been awhile since I've done this!
The big thing that happened this episode was Megumi becoming more open to Ayato. If you think about it, Megumi's the first friend he makes outside of Tokyo Jupiter. You could argue Haruka but Ayato has an initial distrust of her that pops up from time to time as seen in the first half of this episode.
It's understandable why Ayato feels this way. In ep 4 and in his arrival at Nirai Kanai we see that almost everyone seems to have an ulterior motive in regards to Ayato. We even know that Haruka gave Elvy absinthe so that she would mes up her mission in order to have Ayato, so Haruka is not above manipulation either.
Even Yagumo isn't! Yagumo has a skill: he knows how to smooth over rough situations. When Kunugi tells him that "Our tests have found there's nothing physically wrong with you." Yagumo quickly responds with "What he means is he's glad you're not injured." I can't imagine how many times Yagumo has had to "correct" some of the more blunt statements from Commander Kunugi.
Later we see Yagumo talking to a doctor, saying that they must ease the surveillance on Ayato in hopes of stopping the petrification of the Rahxephon. "Electric shocks won't work in this situation." Oh! So apparently electric shocks are seen as an option, but not in this case. Okay.
After the Rahxephon becomes un-petrified , Yagumo remarks that "using Megumi did work."
Which brings us to the core of the episode, Ayato finding a home outside of Tokyo Jupiter. I love the scene of Megumi and Ayato at the store. They fight and bicker at first, until a couple of high school girls pass by, taunting that Megumi is a drop-out. Through this I think Megumi and Ayato find something in common; they both feel like outsiders. Right after this Megu is shocked to find out that Tokyo Jupiter has high schools. It's astounding to think that the citizens outside of Tokyo Jupiter have that little info/that much propaganda about Tokyo Jupiter. At least, now Megumi is discovering that she and Ayato, a Mu, have more in common than she would think.
In this episode we meet Itsuki. My favorite part of this episode is at the end, when Itsuki tells the legend of the first cherry blossom tree. He then goes on to say that Kunugi's cherry trees turn a brilliant shade of blue in the spring.
"I wonder what kind of people are buried under those trees?"
I wonder what kind of people are buried in this society of humans?
Other thoughts:
- A few moments that make you go "oh!" after seeing the whole series, like uncle Rikudo telling Ayato to think of them as family.
-Knowing how long Haruka's had to wait to hear Ayato say "Welcome home!'...;_;.
-Poor Sayoko. "Is this your wife?" She looked so hopeful.
-And we see that Megumi is already crushing on Yagumo.
